Pedro Parreira, former student of Biomedical Engineering at Instituto Superior Técnico, won Fraunhofer Portugal Challenge 2016 in MSc category, for his thesis titled “Novel Spatial Interaction Techniques for Exploring 3D Medical Images”.
This challenge was created in 2010 and aims to encourage the cooperation between industry and scientific community, motivating and rewarding students and researchers who contribute to the philosophy behind Fraunhofer AICOS vision: “Extending the reach of the Information and Knowledge Society”, and its mission “Remarkable Technology, Easy to Use”. Pedro Parreira presented a spatial interface based on touchless hand gestures to control a 3D image.
The participants had the opportunity to present and defend their ideas before an eight-member jury, representing different areas such as industry, local authorities, scientific research and education.
Miguel Duarte, from Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, won the challenge in PhD category, for his thesis titled “Bringing Artificial Intelligence for Swarm Robotics Systems to the Real World”.
