According to the Academic Ranking of World University (ARWU), Técnico is among the European top 17 higher education institutions in engineering. In this Shanghai Ranking, one of the most prestigious worldwide, Técnico occupies the range 50-75 of the best institutions worldwide in this knowledge area.
The list is led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), with whom Técnico has several collaborations.
Universidade de Lisboa is among the top 200 universities worldwide and improved considerably its position, occupying the range 151-200.
According to the president of Técnico, professor Arlindo Oliveira, “the quality of research and development at Técnico, combined with the quality of our faculty, students and graduates, has allowed us to achieve such outstanding positions in international rankings, which are once again confirmed by this ranking.” “The ranking position of Técnico contributes to affirm the quality of the Portuguese engineering and promotes positively the image of our country in Europe and in the world. This ranking confirms once again that Técnico is one of the top European engineering schools, together with University of Oxford, TU Eindhoven, TU Munich and KU Leuven.”
ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Thomson Reuters, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index, among many others. More than 1200 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 500 are published.
