From 12th to 14th July, Técnico will be hosting the conference “Data Science, Statistics & Visualization”, bringing together researchers, as well as national and international professionals at Abreu Faro amphitheatre. Trevor John Hastie, professor at Stanford University, internationally known for his work on applied statistics and outstanding contributions in the field of machine learning, data mining and bioinformatics is one of these international renowned personalities who will attend the conference.
The main goal of this conference is to promote the already existing links between these topics and to show some of the works that recently stand out. Professor Myra Spiliopoulou, from the Otto von Guericke University of Magdeburg and Head of KMD Lab, explained what we can learn from the temporal references of medical database. Using two examples – diabetic foot syndrome and access to a smartphone – the researcher explained the conclusions that we can draw from the study and analysis of collected data. The researcher draw attention to the need of creating new models “to help the expert selecting the hypothesis worth pursuing” and “to incorporate expert’s knowledge in the test model, in a simpler way”.
During the afternoon Daniel Klein, from the University of Konstanz, will give a lecture on the role of data science and visualization.
