Rui Sampaio, a researcher and professor at Instituto Superior Técnico, was awarded during the 14th edition of the International Conference for Technology of Plasticity (ICTP 2023), held in France between 24 and 29 September. The conference has been organised every three years by the Japanese Society for Technology of Plasticity (JSTP) since 1984, and this year brought together around 600 international experts in plastic deformation technology.
The awarded engineer presented himself as a national candidate for the JSTP Award for Young Researchers together with João Pragana, both Técnico professors and members of the Mechanical Engineering Institute (idMEC). The two researchers were included in the preliminary list of 17 candidates selected for the award and Rui Sampaio ended up being one of the three young winners in this edition, for his work “Characterisation of Fracture Forming Limits through Radial Extrusion”.
“Receiving the award is a great honour,” says Rui Sampaio. The researcher believes that the award “is proof that we are at the level of the best schools and research centres in the world in the area of manufacturing processes”, and shows “the dedication and hard work” carried out by the team. He also highlights the “fundamental role” of Técnico in his career, with special appreciation for the “stimulating environment and critical spirit” promoted by the school community. “I am deeply grateful for the opportunities that Técnico and my tutors and colleagues have given me,” he says.
