About the project
This tool provides daily infection risk maps of COVID-19 for mainland Portugal, as well as uncertainty attached to the risk. The risk maps can be used by public health officials to identify local risk areas, to guide surveillance and to control activities. These maps were developed by CERENA researchers, with expertise in Geostatistics and Spatial Data Sciences, aiming to monitor the spread of COVID‐19 in Portugal.
The infection risk maps are the result of a stochastic simulation model that takes into account the reported infection rates by municipality, the spatial patterns of the contamination and the attached uncertainty.
The uncertainty risk is associated with the population dimension for each municipality. Infection rates reported for municipalities with small populations are more uncertain than the equivalent rates for municipalities with large populations.
The daily infection risk maps are available in a WebGIS-based tool.
