Programme Overview

When thinking about the concept of a modern city, the importance of spatial planning and urbanism is vital so that society itself can develop in the most optimal way possible. Territorial Management and Urban Studies professionals are able to actively intervene in a qualified and innovative way in the formulation of strategies and concrete solutions for the problems that arise in the planning, construction, rehabilitation and management of urban and metropolitan spaces.

Based on technical knowledge and a deep capacity for critical reflection, this master’s program aims to provide advanced training in the practice of planning and land management, as well as in the implementation of advanced and innovative techniques for processing information in the analysis of problems and responses in the scope of spatial planning and urbanism.

The Master Programme in Territorial Management and Urban Studies is a joint initiative of Técnico, the Faculty of Architecture and the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning (IGOT) of the University of Lisbon.

Study Plan

The 2nd cycle in Territorial Management and Urban Studies has a duration of 4 semesters (2 years), which is equivalent to 120 ECTS credits, and is made up of the structure depicted below:

Programme Structure

  1. Core Structure (78 ECTS)

    The Master Programme in Territorial Management and Urban Studies (Major) deepens knowledge in topics such as Geography, Urban Management, Organisation and Territorial Planning, Environment and is divided into two distinct branches (30 ECTS):

    • Urban Project
    • Territorial Management

    The programme structure offers the possibility of choosing subjects in this curricular component.

  2. Research Seminar (12 ECTS)

    This seminar will be the beginning of the development of the final course work, exploring research methodologies, literature review, question analysis, goal setting and work planning.

  3. Dissertation (30 ECTS)

    The dissertation is the final assignment of the study cycle, which allows students to focus and specialise on a specific subject that may take any of these formats:

    • Scientific thesis
    • Internship at a company
    • Capstone project

Target audience

All applications from students with higher education such as Geography, Architecture, Civil Engineering, Territory or Environment, Landscape Architecture, Economics, Sociology or other related areas that share, at least in part, concerns with the development and qualification of the territory will be considered.

The programme is taught in Portuguese however may there be international or mobility students enrolled, the curricular units will be taught in English.

Career Opportunities

Técnico MSc graduates in Territorial Management and Urban Studies may work in the design of systems, installations, equipment and services that promote the functioning of a territory. This Master Programme offers two types of professional opportunities: in research and in acting as a technical planning and territorial management, in employers such as:

  • public and private consultancy bodies;
  • land use planning and strategic planning;
  • research entities.

Entry requirements

To apply for a 2nd Cycle at Técnico you should:

  • hold a 1st cycle degree in Science and Technology (except in the case of the 2nd cycle in Architecture, which requires a 1st cycle degree in Architecture);
  • hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that certifies their ability to do the MSc programme which they apply for.

Candidates are selected according to these criteria:

  • affinity between the degree they hold and the programme they apply for;
  • type of degree they hold;
  • academic success in the programme they attended.

Students' Organisations

Técnico students stimulate autonomously and proactively projects that act as a complement to their academic background. For example, the Students’ Organisations provide them with skills and added value, making them more competitive in the labour market.
