What is radiation used for?

Did you know that radiation is not a monster and can actually be used to benefit us all? And it is present in many areas of our daily lives? In this session, we will understand how we come into contact with this technology and how it can help us in the future.

On 14 January 2026, at 10 a.m., live at Técnico – Alameda campus, we will be joined by Joana Madureira, an auxiliary researcher at the Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares, Instituto Superior Técnico, who will answer these questions.

Biography

Joana Madureira graduated in Chemical Engineering and Biochemistry from the NOVA School of Science and Technology in 2011. She completed her PhD in Pharmacy and Health at the University of Salamanca in 2023. She is an Auxiliary Researcher at Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, where she explores the use of ionising radiation technologies to develop new methodologies for treating agro-industrial waste. Additionally, she focuses on the valorisation of natural bioactive compounds that have high added value, which can be reused as new ingredients in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food, or nutraceuticals.

About the Programme
