“If I were…a structural engineer” is an initiative organised by Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in partnership with Instituto Superior Técnico.
Buildings often constructed before modern building practices, can be particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. However, engineers can help buildings withstand earthquakes.
The first part of the visit starts at the Civil Engineering Museum of Instituto Superior Técnico, to understand how structures behave, the effects of an earthquake and what can be done to reduce damage.
In the second part of the activity, we will visit the Church of São Roque, built in the 16th century, which withstood the 1755 earthquake thanks to its engineering design.
