We are pleased to announce a new IST Distinguished Lecture on July 5, at 11 a.m., in Abreu Faro amphitheatre, Interdisciplinary building.
- Constantino Tsallis (Professor/Emeritus Researcher, Brazilian Center for Physical Research/Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, Rio de Janeiro; member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the Latin America Academy of Sciences).
- Lecture: “Why is it easier to understand what is energy than what is entropy?”
- Abstract: In physics, energy has to do with possibilities. Entropy has to do with the probabilities of those possibilities. The former emerges in mechanics and electromagnetism, which are empirical sciences. The latter emerges in thermodynamics and statistical mechanics, which are more abstract sciences. I intend to elaborate on these concepts, and illustrate them in both simple and complex typical systems.
- Bio.: Constantino Tsallis was born in Greece, grew up and studied in Argentina, and accomplished his Doctorat d’État ès Sciences Physiques at the University of Paris, where he taught for many years. He also taught at the École Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris. In 1975 he emigrated to Brazil, where he lives since then. Emeritus researcher at the Brazilian Center for Physical Research (Rio de Janeiro) and at the Santa Fe Institute (New Mexico), Doctor Honoris Causa of various universities og Brazil, Argentina, and Greece. He was honored with prizes in several countries, including the distinction of Aristion (Excellence) by the Academy of Athens, originally founded by Plato. A recent study at the Stanford University ranked him, for the third consecutive year, as the world-wide most influential scientist of Brazil.• Promotors / Moderators: Mário Figueiredo (Full professor, DEEC/IST; IT Lx) and André Martins (Associate professor, DEEC/IST; IT Lx).
