Luís Oliveira e Silva, professor at the Department of Physics and President of the Scientific Council at Técnico, will be decorated as Grand Officer of the Order of Public Instruction by the President of the Portuguese Republic.
The ceremony will be held on July 29th, at 6 p.m., in Palácio de Belém and will be open to the public.
The President of the Portuguese Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, had announced this decoration during the commemorations of Técnico’s 105th anniversary. At that time, the president said that “this decoration was meant to all who are part of Técnico.”
Luís Oliveira e Silva is Full Professor since 2010 at the Department of Physcics, Instituto Superior Técnico. He was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of California – Los Angeles from 1997 to 2001, and develops his research activity at GoLP – Group of Lasers and Plasmas at Instituto de Plasmas e Fusão Nuclear.
In March 2016, professor Luís Oliveira e Silva was granted an ERC Advanced Grant worth €1,95 million, after the €1,6 million in 2010. ERC Advanced Grants are designed to allow outstanding research leaders to pursue ground-breaking, high-risk projects in Europe.
The Order of Public Instruction, assigned by the President of the Portuguese Republic, is intended to reward high services rendered to Education and Teaching.
