Lecture:
It is estimated that 1 in 3 people will suffer from a brain disorder at some point in their lives. Despite the extraordinary progress made in the last century, many of these diseases are highly debilitating and have no cure, representing one of the most significant socio-economic challenges of our time. Biomedical engineering is crucial to advancing our understanding of how the brain works, as well as our ability to diagnose and treat its dysfunction. In my lecture, I will show how biomedical engineers can lead this transformative journey, focussing on the remarkable contributions of brain imaging.
Patrícia Figueiredo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), Universidade de Lisboa, and Principal Investigator of the Biomedical Engineering Lab at the Institute for Systems and Robotics – Lisboa. She graduated in Physics Engineering from IST and holds a DPhil degree in Neuroimaging from the University of Oxford, having recently been conferred Habilitation in Biomedical Engineering by IST. Throughout her academic career, Prof. Figueiredo has made significant contributions in the field of Neuroimaging and Biomedical Engineering more generally. At IST, she has been the chair of the Medical Imaging, Neuroimaging, and Neuroengineering courses and served as the vice-coordinator of the MSc Programme in Biomedical Engineering. She has also supervised several MSc and PhD students in Biomedical Engineering and related fields. Prof. Figueiredo’s research is focused on imaging human brain function noninvasively using MRI and EEG, with applications in basic neuroscience as well as disorders such as epilepsy, dementia, schizophrenia, and migraine. Her work has been distinguished by numerous awards, including a Prize for Women in Science by L’Oréal Portugal, a best paper award by the Portuguese League against Epilepsy, and the António Xavier Prize for the best Portuguese PhD Thesis in NMR, EPR or MRI where she served as advisor. Besides her teaching and research activities, Prof. Figueiredo is currently the Vice-President of the Department of Bioengineering at IST, the President Elect of the European Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and Biology (ESMRMB), and the Secretary of the Brain Function Study Group of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM).
