Lecture:
Fibre-polymer composites (FRP), which have been used for decades in various industries (aerospace, automotive, naval), have a high potential for use in civil engineering applications due to their lightness, high strength and non-corrodibility. However, there are some challenges associated with their use, such as their low ductility, their behaviour at high temperatures in fire situations, and their environmental impact. In the first part of this talk, an overview of FRP composites for civil engineering applications will be presented, including the constituent materials, structural forms and main applications. The second part of the lecture will focus on some of the research projects carried out at Técnico, both fundamental and applied, including some of the first FRP composite bridges built in Portugal.
João Ramôa Correia was born in Lisbon, in 1978. He is a Full Professor of Civil Engineering at Técnico, where he coordinates a research group (CORE) on fibre-polymer composite materials (FRP). The main research areas of the CORE group are the mechanical behaviour of FRP composites systems, connection technology, long-term performance, durability, fire behaviour and sustainability. He has supervised 20 PhD students, 100 master’s students and published about 200 scientific articles. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Composites for Construction (ASCE) and a member of the Editorial Board of the journals Composite Structures and Fire Safety Journal. Between 2018 and 2022, he was leader of CEN TC250 Project Team WG4.T2 “FRP Structures” which has developed the Technical Specification CEN/TS 19101:2022 (future Eurocode) for the Design of Fibre-Polymer Composite Structures.
He received the IABSE Prize (2012), awarded by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), the IIFC Distinguished Young Researcher Award (2016) and the IIFC President’s Award (2023), awarded by the International Institute for FRP in Construction (IIFC).
