Técnico podcast “110 Histórias, 110 Objetos” – The scientific flip charts

The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) covers the 110 years of history of Instituto Superior Técnico, through its past, present and future objects.

A collection of objects related to different fields, such as science, music, arts and sports, is the starting point for conversations with people who will tell us more about the history of these objects.

A new episode is released every week. The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) is part of the Público newspaper podcasts.

Today’s episode (#53) – 1st July 2022: 110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) – The scientific flip charts.

There are 116 scientific flip charts from the early 20th century that are considered to be the first versions of the current PowerPoint slides. Each scientific flip chart has about 2 meters high by 1.5 meters wide, and include paleontology and geology illustrations, and several figures including dinosaurs, mammals, sponges, trilobites, plants, among others. For decades, until the 1950’s, they were crucial for mining engineering classes. The scientific flip charts are exhibited in the Geosciences Museum, at Instituto Superior Técnico (Alameda campus), and are one of the rare collections of scientific “parietal drawings” in Portugal. Three scientific flip charts were made by Técnico students who attended the institute during the 1950’s.
