8th edition of LxMLS brings hundreds of machine learning enthusiasts to Técnico

The Summer School organised annually by IT (Instituto de Telecomunicações), INESC-ID (Institute for Systems Engineering and Computers) and Técnico brings together national and international students, researchers and professionals.

During last week, Técnico hosted the 8th Lisbon Machine Learning School (LxMLS). Hundreds of students, researchers and professionals from all over the world attended the event and discovered the latest innovations in machine learning.

Stefan Riezler (Germany), Karen Livescu (USA), Kar Moritz Hermann (United Kingdom), Slav Petrov (USA) and nine other international experts shared their experiences. Slav Petrov, Research Director at Google leading teams that conduct natural language processing and machine learning research, spoke about the neural networks, the natural language processing and the complexity in syntactic parsing. According to Slav Petrov “in the domain of syntactic parsing, complexity is in the grammar”. “And that’s why the best results come from a richer grammar”, he added.

LxMLS promotes the contact between the participants and companies. Farfetch, Feedzai, Priberam and DareData were some of the companies that participated in this year’s edition. Besides the exchange of ideas, the participants have the opportunity to learn more about technology and cutting-edge research.
