Two academic subjects taught at Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) rank among the world top 50 according to the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020. Marine/Ocean Engineering ranks once again in the Top 10 (6th place), while Remote Sensing ranks 38th. Several other academic subjects taught at Técnico appear a little further down on the list: Civil Engineering (51-75), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (76-100), Automation & Control (101-150), Chemical Engineering (101-150), Energy Science & Engineering (101-150), Transportation Science and Technology (101-150) and Water Resources (101-150).
ULisboa also achieves a great position worldwide in other academic subjects taught at Técnico, such as: Mechanical Engineering (151-200), Environmental Science & Engineering (151-200), Physics (151-200), Computer Science & Engineering (201-300), Telecommunication Engineering (201-300), Biomedical Engineering (201-300) and Mathematics (201-300).
Shanghai Ranking began to publish the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009 and it is one of the most prestigious rankings worldwide. Shanghai Ranking assessment is based in scientific production indicators and research quality, such as: number of papers, papers published in high impact journals and number of citations (based on InCites database). The number of internationally collaborated publications and the academic awards for faculty and researchers are also taken into account.
At national level, ULisboa ranks 1st in 27 academic subjects, and ranks 2nd in another 10. In total, 46 academic subjects were assessed in Portuguese higher education institutions.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) stands out once again and is number one in five academic subjects: Automation & Control, Electrical & Electronic Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Chemical Engineering and Materials Science & Engineering.
The Harvard University holds a leading position in 14 academic subjects: Social Sciences (5), Medical Sciences (4), Life Sciences (2) and Engineering (3).
The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2020 contains rankings of universities in 54 subjects across natural sciences, life sciences, engineering medical sciences and social sciences. In total, more than 4000 universities were ranked.
