The Lisbon Academy of Sciences has announced the newly elected members for the year 2023. Three professors from Instituto Superior Técnico are now full members: Hélder Rodrigues (Department of Mechanical Engineering), Isabel Sá Correia (Department of Bioengineering) and Mário Figueiredo (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering). The Técnico professors included in the list of corresponding members are: André Martins (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering/Department of Computer Science and Engineering), Ana Patrícia Gonçalves (Department of Mathematics), Carlos Fernandes (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering), Isabel Ribeiro (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) and José Borbinha (Department of Computer Science and Engineering).
The Técnico alumnus and current Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), António Guterres, was also elected honorary member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.
The members of the Academy of Sciences are chosen among Portuguese citizens who have produced scientific or literary work of recognised merit.
The Lisbon Academy of Sciences aims to practice and encourage scientific research, stimulate the enrichment and study of other forms of national culture, collaborate in education and teaching activities and contribute to the appreciation and discussion of ideas through research.
