Five Técnico students in the final of the ‘3 Minute Thesis’ competition

The ULisboa competition challenges PhD students to explain their theses in 3 minutes. Five of the 12 finalists are Técnico students.

The final of the 3rd edition of the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, organised by Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), will feature 12 finalists who will try to achieve a place on the podium on 22 May 2025, in the Pavilhão de Portugal. All participants will receive diplomas recognising their merit, with cash prizes of 1000 euros, 2000 euros and 5000 euros reserved for the top three places. Five of the 12 finalists are students from Instituto Superior Técnico.

The candidates, PhD students at Universidade de Lisboa, must explain the importance and impact of their research in three minutes and using a single slide.

The Técnico student Catarina Botelho won the 1st edition of the competition, with ‘Fala’ project – a vocal biomarker for disease detection. Third place also went to a Técnico student, Matteu Pisano, who presented a project that aims to better understand the beginning of the Universe. In last year’s competition, Técnico was also represented in the final.

Before the competition, the participants attended a science communication workshop organised by ULisboa.

The final event is free to attend.
