The McKinsey Merit Award ceremony, held on 24 September, in the Congress Centre of Instituto Superior Técnico, at Alameda campus, highlighted the performance of Ana Beatriz Andrade, an Aerospace Engineering undergraduate student, in the Computational Mathematics curricular unit. The student, who won the award amounting to €1,600, highlighted “the demanding nature and relevance of the curricular unit”. “This award has been an additional motivation to achieve the best possible results. Receiving it now is also an incentive to keep working and growing in the future”, she concluded.
Honourable mentions were also awarded to Apolo Gomes and Laura Guerreiro, Applied Mathematics and Computation undergraduate students, and Miguel Martins, Materials Engineering undergraduate students. All received recognition diplomas for their performance in Computational Mathematics.
Pedro Amaral, Vice-President of Técnico for Corporate Interface, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, explained that “with these awards, we recognise not only the talent and dedication of students, but also the contributions of faculty and the department”. He also pointed out that interdisciplinary subjects such as Computational Mathematics strengthen essential problem-solving skills, serving as a true “calling card” for Técnico.
Diogo Amorim Santiago, Junior Engagement Manager at McKinsey, congratulated the four students on their achievements. As a Técnico alumnus himself, he acknowledged the demanding nature of the curricular unit. “Técnico has been a huge source of talent for McKinsey. Almost all my teams have consisted of Técnico alumni, which highlights the quality of the training and its relevance to the market”, he said.
On the same occasion, McKinsey donated €1,070 to the Department of Mathematics at Técnico, aimed at improving the quality of teaching in the Computational Mathematics curricular unit. Representing the department, Carlos Caleiro, a professor at Técnico, expressed gratitude for the company’s contribution in valuing basic engineering curricular units and praised the work of all his colleagues involved.
McKinsey is part of Técnico Partner Network, whose mission is to recognise student talent and the relevance of the training provided, while reinforcing the School’s ties with the business sector.
