New co-opted members of School Assembly

Carlos Moedas, Carlos Mineiro Alves and Ana Dias took office this Tuesday during a virtual ceremony.

The Técnico alumni Carlos Moedas, Carlos Mineiro Alves and Ana Dias are the new co-opted members of School Assembly (CE) for 2021-2024. The swearing-in ceremony was held this Tuesday, 19th January, in virtual format.

The new members were inducted by the rector of Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), professor António Cruz Serra. The virtual ceremony brought together several members of School Assembly, the president of Técnico, professor Rogério Colaço, and members of the Governing Board.

The new members were co-opted by the remaining members of the CE already in performance of duties, by absolute majority, on a reasoned proposal by one third of these members.

The CE is a strategic decision-making body that monitors legal compliance, school’s statutes, in particular, the mission of Técnico.

About Carlos Moedas:

Carlos Moedas was the European Commissioner responsible for Research, Science and Innovation, under the leadership of President Jean-Claude Juncker. He has a degree in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Throughout his career, he worked at Suez group, Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank. In 2008, he decides to create his own investment management company.

In 2011 he was elected Member of the Portuguese Parliament and became Deputy Secretary of State to the Prime Minister of the XIX Constitutional Government, where he was tasked with coordination of the structural adjustment programme.

He was appointed as a member of the European Commission in 2014. Carlos Moedas was the Commissioner responsible for Research, Science and Innovation, one of the largest science and innovation programmes worth 77 billion euros. He designed the proposal for the future Horizon Europe programme worth 100 billion euros, set to be launched in 2021.

About Carlos Mineiro Aires:

Carlos Mineiro Aires has a degree in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and has held the position of President of Ordem dos Engenheiros (OE) since 2016.

He was president of the Board of Directors of OE – South Region (2010-2016) and he holds the position of President of the World Council of Civil Engineers (2018-2021).

The Técnico alumnus held positions of high management responsibility at Metropolitano de Lisboa, Simtejo, Portuguese National Commission on Large Dams, Commission for the Environmental Impact Assessment of the Alqueva Dam. He was president and vice-president of the Water Institute (INAG).

Carlos Mineiro Aires was co-opted member of the CE in the previous quadrennium.

About Ana Dias:

Ana Dias has a degree in Engineering Physics from Instituto Superior Técnico and an MBA from INSEAD.

Throughout her academic journey at Técnico, she was vice-president of the Students’ Union (1992 – 1993) and member of the Pedagogical Council.

She is Executive Board member of RTP since June 2018. She was elected member of the EBU Finance Group in June 2019.

The Técnico alumna is a founder partner and consultant of MedTech Biosurfit (since 2006), member of the Advisory Board for Innovation at Vieira de Almeida (since 2017), and member of the jury of Portugal Ventures’ Call for Entrepreneurship.

Ana Dias held management positions at McKinsey, Portugal Telecom and José de Mello Saúde, in finance and management control, strategic planning, human resources and innovation policies. She has experience in strategic consulting, telecommunications and services.
