There are many reasons why students choose Técnico: the fascination with technology, the passion for mathematics and/or physics, the interest about problem solving and the ambitious goal of “helping to build the future”. The high employability of Técnico graduates gives them greater security for a bright future.
A few years ago, Joana Marques discovered her interest in “computers and coding in general, although I still don’t know much about it”, she says. She got into her first choice course – Computer Science and Engineering, which “is much in demand with the employers”, she adds.
Her parents graduated from Técnico. “My father told me it wasn’t easy; that the first months were really difficult, but people are always ready to help each other. He told me that this will prepare us for the job market”.
Pedro Neves became interested in Materials Engineering after watching a documentary on Netflix. “As I went deeper into the topic, I got to know the inspiring work of Neri Oxman [MIT Media Lab researcher]”, he recalls. “I think that this engineering field will grow a lot in the future and I would like to specialize in biomaterials”, he stresses. “Técnico is a school of excellence, which has obviously influenced my choice”, he says. He was told that “studying at Técnico is very demanding”. “It motivates me and I will be better prepared for the job market”.
Maria João Teixeira is reliving the experience of getting into Técnico. She was a Chemical Engineering student but she didn’t enjoy it. She decided to change course and she applied for the National Competition for Access to Public Higher Education (CNAES), but she wanted to continue studying at Técnico. “I started to see other options. I wanted something related to Physics and I wanted a more practical course. I spoke with colleagues from different courses and suddenly Mechanical Engineering started to make perfect sense”, she recalls.
“It’s going to be amazing. I am familiar with the campus, I know what is expected of me, it’s going to be an incredible journey”, she says. “I want to work in this engineering field, whether in the automotive industry or in other industries, where I can be challenged every day”.
Pedro Vasques got into his 2nd choice course – Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering – and he couldn’t be happier. “If I don’t like the course, I can change later, but I come with an open mind”, he stresses. “Técnico is one of the best engineering schools, if not the best. So, it would only make sense choosing Técnico”, he adds.
