Professor Joaquim Sampaio Cabral was awarded by the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies

Joaquim Sampaio Cabral, professor at the IST Department of Bioengineering (DBE) and Head of the Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB), was recently awarded the Career Achievement Award by the Portuguese Society for Stem Cells and Cell Therapies (SPCE-TC), for his contributions to the growth of SPCE-TC and the Portuguese scientific community working in this area.

The award ceremony took place during the SPCE-TC scientific meeting, held in Braga, on 10th and 11th March.

Professor Joaquim Sampaio Cabral has a degree (1976), PhD (1982) and Habilitation (1988) in Chemical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico. He did a Post-doctoral study in Biochemical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1988. He was a professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering from December 1978 to December 2011. He was the Founding Head (2011) of DBE. In 2015, he was awarded the title of Distinguished Professor at Técnico.

Joaquim Cabral research group-Stem Cell Engineering Research Group- of iBB is focused on the development of bioprocesses with stem cells and their derivatives, with applications in Regenerative Medicine.

Throughout his career, professor Joaquim Sampaio Cabral has made exceptional contributions to the field of Bioengineering, both nationally and internationally, and he is considered one of the most prominent figures in this area.

Professor Joaquim Sampaio Cabral was a founding member (2005), vice-president (2006) and presidente (2009-10) of SPCE-TC.
