Professor Luís Magalhães gave his last lecture, last Wednesday, July 6, at Técnico – Alameda campus (Abreu Faro amphitheatre).

“If anyone has any doubts about the importance of professor Luís Magalhães, just look at this amphitheatre full of people of different generations”, said professor Rogério Colaço, President of Técnico. After his speech, professor Rogério Colaço awarded the Técnico’s 110th anniversary medal to professor Luís Magalhães.

“Professor Luís Magalhães was very important for Técnico and for the Department of Mathematics, so I would like to express my sincere gratitude to him”, said professor José Mourão, Head of the Department of Mathematics.

“Few will have played an important role as professor Luís Magalhães, inside and outside Técnico”, said professor Luís Barreira, Coordinator of the Differential Equations and Dynamical Systems Scientific Area, who also highlighted professor Luís Magalhães’ published books and several prominent positions: The Presidency of Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT), the Presidency of the General Council of the University of Algarve, the Presidency of the Department of Mathematics at Técnico, and also his functions as representative of Portugal in the OECD and member of the Economic and Social Council.

“I would like to thank everyone present this afternoon for attending my last lecture, especially students”, said professor Luís Magalhães.

Professor Luís Magalhães talked about his research work and academic life, and highlighted the importance of attracting talent and encouraging critical thinking. The Técnico professor also pointed out the importance of providing students and professors with the necessary conditions for developing a good work, and how mathematics teaching has evolved at Técnico.
