Last Friday, Luís Oliveira e Silva, professor at the Department of Physics and president of the Scientific Council at Técnico was decorated as Grand Officer of the Order of Public Instruction, by the President of the Portuguese Republic.
The ceremony took place at Palácio de Belém and two other professors were also distinguished – Eduardo Veloso (Commander) and António Vasconcelos Tavares (Grand Officer) -, highlighting the importance of education and research.
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the three distinguished professors, “have made outstanding contributions in academia and science in Portugal”. The President noted that Luís Oliveira e Silva has a “remarkable scientific career, at national and international level, in research, innovation and creativity.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, had announced this decoration during the commemorations of Técnico’ s 105th anniversary. At that time, the president said that “this decoration was meant to all who are part of Técnico.”
