Técnico alumnus elected as one of the best engineers under 40

The award, which is rarely given to European engineers, was awarded by the American magazine Consulting-Specifying Engineer.

Tiago Ribeiro has taken part in the design or analysis of more than 150 structures in 20 countries. “Structural Engineering lies behind the design and planning of buildings and the physical infrastructures that surround us,” he says. According to Tiago Ribeiro, this engineering field has evolved radically in recent years, but requires a continuous updating and training.

Structural engineer for almost fifteen years and manager at TAL Projecto – Projectos, Estudos e Serviços de Engenharia, Lda, Tiago Ribeiro has always tried to complement his daily work with “an intense study of knowledge, which is fundamental to provide the best possible service to my clients”, he explains.

Being elected as one of the top 40 engineers under the age of 40 “was, first of all, a huge surprise,” says the Técnico alumnus, once the 40 Under 40 Winners award is rarely awarded to European engineers. Still, the young engineer considers this distinction very rewarding, “not because I think I’m actually one of the best engineers, but because a recognition like this one suggests that I’ve done some things right in my professional career.”

Engineer Tiago Ribeiro was part of the team awarded with the European Steel Design Award 2011. He collaborated in several international research programmes, produced engineering software and has written a book. He has also lectured for various university courses, advised and examined master theses. He takes part in the sub-commission 8 (Eurocode 8) of CT115, a set of European Standards related to the Design of structures for earthquake resistance.

He has been a member of the disciplinary board of Ordem dos Engenheiros – região sul. He received an honourable mention, within the scope of the 29th edition of the Young Engineer Innovation Award (PIJE) in 2019, for the work “Conversão de plataformas petrolíferas fixas em parques eólicos em ambiente oceânico”, which he co-authored.

Tiago Ribeiro shares his happiness “this award recognises not only professional and academic achievements, but also the service provided to the community in which the nominee is integrated.”
