The contract signing ceremony celebrating the hiring of 66 new professors and researchers took place on the morning of 28 November at Técnico Innovation Center powered by Fidelidade.
The ceremony was attended by Rogério Colaço, President of Instituto Superior Técnico, who emphasised the importance of Técnico to renew itself every year. “Our goal is for Técnico to become increasingly innovative over time”, he stated, reinforcing the idea that “Técnico only exists because of its people; everyone is needed and indispensable”. He also highlighted the purpose of creating the School, noting that “students, while being trained, must be exposed to real contexts and real problems”. He also set challenges for these new Técnico professionals, saying “we cannot continue to train students in the same way we did 20 years ago”. He also stressed that “the boundaries between areas of specialisation in engineering are blurring, which requires a cross-disciplinary approach to training”.
According to the President of the Scientific Council, Pedro Brogueira, “being part of Técnico means doing science, with an increased capacity to promote the scientific component”. He reiterated the idea shared by the President of Técnico that “Técnico is its people” and said it was “an honour seeing Técnico chosen by professors and researchers”. He also encouraged these new professors and researchers to “inspire the School’s most important asset: our students” and left a final message for the newcomers: “please be happy, and welcome to Técnico”.
Luís Oliveira e Silva, President of the School Council, highlighted this ceremony as “a unique moment in your careers” and stated that “you are very important for the university as you represent the renewal of energy, ideas and perspectives”. He added that “when we hire professors, we are shaping the future of Técnico”, also stressing that “we are here to inspire, fulfill our students’ dreams and discover new things”.
The President of the Pedagogical Council, Miguel Cacho Teixeira, emphasised that “research and teaching are inseparable” and called on them to “invest in your careers as researchers, but also as professors”, because “the new generations are very demanding in the way we share and pass down knowledge”. He also welcomed all the new professors and researchers and congratulated them: “you deserve congratulations, but Técnico must also be congratulated for being able to attract you”.
The event also featured a speech by Cláudia Jacinto, Head of Human Resources, who welcomed everyone and expressed her great satisfaction with the preparation of the event, and Luís Lemos Alves, Coordinator for the Monitoring and Development of Faculty and Researchers, who highlighted the Shaping the Future programme, which provides training and facilitates the adaptation of new professors and researchers at Técnico.
In April this year, Técnico had already welcomed 47 new professors and researchers.
