Two years after its last publication, the mathematics journal ‘Ponto Fixo’, created by the Mathematics Students’ Organisation (NMATH) at Instituto Superior Técnico, returns with its fifth edition. The new edition reaffirms the students’ commitment to disseminating mathematics both within and outside the school.
“While most publications might lose relevance after such a long time, mathematics remains timeless; this edition is as valuable today as it would have been in 2023”, says Diana Gaspar, a Master’s student in Applied Mathematics and Computation and the journal’s editor.
This edition includes articles dedicated to three of the four most recent Fields Medal winners, contributions from Técnico students, a film review and interviews with alumni discussing their decision to pursue a PhD. The thematic diversity aims to combine tradition with innovation, in a format designed for both specialists and the curious.
The new edition aligns with other recent activities promoted by NMATH, such as Time2Talk, an event focused on sharing experiences and paths related to mathematics, and the Integration Bee, which encourages students’ engagement with the subject beyond the classroom. “Ponto Fixo stimulates mathematical dialogue, gives students and professors a voice, and rekindles the passion that draws people to mathematics”, says Diana Gaspar, emphasizing the journal’s role in academic life and scientific culture.
Aimed at math enthusiasts, the new edition also welcomes anyone interested, regardless of their familiarity with the subject, ‘whether they are solving challenges, skimming, or reading cover to cover’ concludes the editor, thanking the journal’s contributors and reaffirming ‘the enduring spirit of knowledge-sharing that keeps the journal alive’.
