“Técnico mentors gave us a warm welcome”

These are the words by Filipa Costa but many students feel the same way.

Mentors are the first people that the new students meet. They understand first-hand the challenges a newcomer faces, they clarify their doubts and guide them during the welcome week. About 530 Técnico students applied for the Mentoring programme. This Friday, 13th September, Alameda campus welcomed the students of Civil Engineering, Mining and Geological Engineering, and Architecture.

“Mentors are very nice, they help us a lot and they give us a lot of support”, says Filipa Costa, Mining and Geological engineering student. “If I didn’t have a mentor I probably wouldn’t have done so many things during the morning. Técnico mentors gave us a warm welcome”, she adds.

Pedro Santos, Architecture student, had never been to Alameda campus. “I am really liking the facilities, the academic atmosphere, the extracurricular activities and, of course, to have all this attention from mentors”.

Matilde Antão chose the Architecture course because it will allow her “to combine her training in Science with her taste for Art”. “Mentors have been really important because they clarify our doubts and help us to feel more integrated”, she adds.

“The prestige” and “the quality teaching” were some important reasons why Margarida Barriga applied for Técnico. She entered her 2nd course choice – Civil Engineering – but she is happy. She will follow in her father’s footsteps as a civil engineer. “Having someone to guide us and who has been through this process some years ago is very good”, says Margarida Barriga.

The Mentoring programme is pioneer project created by Técnico in 1996. More than 1400 new students enrolled and registered in the several courses throughout the week. The enrollment process is not yet concluded as the special deadline for applicants residing in the Autonomous Regions of the Azores and Madeira is still ongoing.
