Professor Armando Pombeiro, from the Department of Chemical Engineering (DEQ) was distinguished as Honorary Professor of St. Petersburg State University, for his outstanding contribution “to the development of chemical science and higher education”, at the ceremony held on the occasion of the 21st Mendeleev Congress on General and Applied Chemistry, on 10th September 2019.
“I am very honoured because St. Petersburg State University is one of the two largest Russian universities, with a long history, tradition and prestige”, says professor Armando Pombeiro. Besides the official acts, the ceremony also included a tree-planting moment which, according to the professor , “has a great symbolism”.
This distinction by St. Petersburg State University is the result of a long collaboration between professor Armando Pombeiro and professor Vadim Kukushkin, “which began a quarter century ago and it is possibly the most fruitful scientific cooperation established between our countries – which result in more than a hundred publications in high-impact magazines and international books”, points out the Técnico professor. “The success of our cooperation is based on a constructive attitude that is not influenced by financial constraints”, says Professor Armando Pombeiro. The merit and impact of this collaboration is recognised by both institutions, and for this reason Universidade de Lisboa will soon confer the title of Doctor Honoris Causa to professor Vadim Kukushkin. According to professor Armando Pombeiro these distinctions will contribute to “the strengthening of scientific and cultural ties between the two institutions, which makes me very happy”.
