The Técnico Solar Boat (TSB) team sailed from North to South Portugal in 2020, during the 1st edition of “Odisseia TSB” (“TSB Odyssey”). Now, the team is about to challenge its limits once again, setting a course to Madeira island to show the work developed over the last year “and raise awareness of renewable energies”, as highlighted by the Técnico student and TSB leader, João Novo.
The adventure starts on September 2, and after the Madeira island the team will sail to Porto Santo, where it will stay until September 11. Over these two weeks, the TSB will complete several routes, and will pass through iconic points such as Ponta de São Lourenço, Ponta da Calheta, Ponta do Pargo and Ilhas Desertas. Closer to the date of the event, the TSB will announce on its social networks the dates of each route, which will be adjusted to the meteorological conditions.
The team’s latest prototype São Rafael 03-SR03 will be the protagonist of the event. Some famous sports personalities such as Mayra Santos (world record holder for countercurrent static swimming), Lúcia Franco (Trail Running and Sky Running athlete), João Rodrigues (sailor and the Portuguese athlete who has participated in the most Olympics) and André Pereira (sailor) will join the event, as well as Mafalda Freitas, Regional Director of the Sea.
The SR03 has recently won 2nd place in the Water 2021 competition, which took place in Alqueva in early June, and ranked 6th in the “Monaco Energy Boat Challenge”, last July. The TSB team also brought the “Communication Prize” from Monaco.
TSB has already developed 3 prototypes powered by solar energy since 2015 – São Rafael 01, 02 and now the SR03. The TSB team decided to embrace an extra challenge: to develop their first hydrogen-powered prototype – São Miguel 01.
