TUIST celebrates its 24th anniversary

On the way to its 24th anniversary, TUIST - Tuna Universitária do Instituto Superior Técnico continues to pursue the principles that inspired its creation.

The ceremony of TUIST’s 24th anniversary was full of music and friendly spirit. “We believe that these years truly enriched the lives of all people involved” shared Pedro Micaela, president of TUIST, who also added that “TUIST has its own identity and is constantly searching for new solutions, which is a typical attitude at Técnico”.

They consider themselves as the ambassadors of Técnico, of Lisbon and of the university spirit. They are known as “a Tuna do fado” and their performances earned them prestigious awards.

TUIST is composed of students, engineers, masters, PhD and it has over 100 members. The most represented courses are Civil Engineering and Computer Engineering.

They made their official debut on 23rd March 1993 at Alameda, during the “Festival Internacional de Tunas Universitárias do Técnico”. Almost half a century later TUIST celebrates this date hosting the “Festival de Tunas Cidade de Lisboa”, which is already in its 19th edition. This year TUIST also organised a fundraising show for Eleonas Refugee Camp. According to Pedro Micaela, the idea came from a member of TUIST who had done volunteer work at Eleonas Refugee Camp and encouraged all the group to contribute to this cause. The show was a success and they raised €1000.

TUIST regularly organises a festival at Coliseu dos Recreios. This year’s edition took place on March 25 and brought together the best national “tunas”. “A future full of music, friendship and joy” is the desire of Pedro Micaela and TUIST for the coming years.
