Challenge Home 2030 (“A Casa 2030”)

“A Casa 2030” is a national competition for multidisciplinary ideas for the Casa do Futuro, innovative and framed with the challenges of decarbonization of the construction sector in Portugal and Europe, launched on April 27, 2022, organized by the Engineering Department Civil, Arquitetura e Georecursos do Técnico (DECivil) and the company VIVA Domus, with support from the Municipal Councils of Lisbon, Oeiras and Seixal, and the companies Gaiurb, Rede Nacional de Expressos and Vanguard Properties, and also with the collaboration of the University of Aveiro.

Project presentation.

Among the project’s requirements is the use of renewable energy management and production systems, thermal and acoustic insulation, water management and treatment, as well as outdoor spaces such as gardens, community gardens, playgrounds, ecopoints, bike paths and parking.

Regulation.

The contest consists of two stages:

  • 1st Phase – May 28 and 29, 2022
    • A hackathon will take place simultaneously at Técnico, in Lisbon, and in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the City Hall spaces, between 2:00 pm on the 28th and 2:00 pm on the 29th of May.
    • Registration until May 20. – Application form
  • 2nd Phase – between June 13 and September 9, 2022
    • Preparation of a preliminary study of a set of 5 residential buildings and the surrounding area, which should include proximity services and equipment for the different age strata of the population that will occupy them, by the 18 winning teams of the 1st phase.
    • Monetary prizes, between 1500 and 6000 Euros, will be awarded to the winning teams of the two phases, and given the possibility of participating in internship programs in several of the sponsoring entities of this contest.

«This type of competition has already been done in Dutch and English universities, but very focused on the residential building», Fernando Nunes da Silva (retired full professor at Técnico; CiTUA) told to Expresso. He adds «We thought it would be interesting to broaden the scope, considering the block and its management, and challenge Portuguese students to develop their ideas at a time when the Government is launching a huge program to build 26,000 homes.».
