The European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE) awarded the Arie van Weelden Award to the Técnico professor (Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture and Georesources – DECivil) and CERENA researcher Leonardo Azevedo, in recognition of his contributions to exploration geophysics, rock physics, seismology, geostatistics and inverse problem theory. The presentation of the Arien van Weelden Award took place on 6 June 2022, at the Opening Session of the 83rd Annual Meeting of EAGE (6-9 June, Madrid).

“I thank EAGE and the Awards Committee for this prestigious internationally recognized award. I am grateful to the colleagues with whom I have had the opportunity to work and have fruitful discussions over the past few years. Finally, I am grateful to my mentors and students; this award would not be possible without them”, said professor Leonardo Azevedo.

The award, honoring the memory of Arien van Weelden, founder and first president of EAGE, is awarded in recognition of significant contributions to one or more disciplines of the association, taken by an EAGE member under the age of 35.

EAGE recognizes in Professor Leonardo Azevedo his extraordinary scientific curiosity showcasing his creativity in solving complex problems and in interpreting problems in the field of geosciences. “I hope that this award can inspire students and young researchers to pursue their goals in the fields of geosciences and geophysics”, shared the Técnico professor.

EAGE was founded in 1951 and from the beginning has remained true to its motto ‘Quaere et Invenies’, Seek and ye shall find. Its mission is to promote the development and application of geosciences and related engineering disciplines, promote innovation and technical progress, and foster communication, fellowship and cooperation among those who work, study or are interested in these fields.
