ULisboa leads Times Higher Education’s national “Engineering” ranking with contribution from Técnico

Universidade de Lisboa was ranked once again as the top national university in the field of “Engineering”.

The 2026 edition of the Times Higher Education by Subject Rankings once again highlights Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) as the highest-ranked Portuguese institution in the field of “Engineering”, with a strong contribution from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa.

In the field of Engineering, ULisboa ranks first at national level, in the 301-400 range globally, out of a total of 1,555 institutions evaluated. The ranking uses performance indicators covering teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook, focusing on areas such as “General Engineering”, “Electrical and Electronic Engineering”, “Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering”, “Civil Engineering” and “Chemical Engineering” – core areas of Técnico’s educational offering and scientific output.

Universidade de Lisboa also ranks 2nd nationally in Physical Sciences and Computer Science, which is associated with performance in broad-based scientific areas that include research and training in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and computer science.

The results now released confirm the trend of the previous edition of THE by Subject Rankings. In 2025, ULisboa was already ranked as the best-positioned national institution in the field of Engineering, maintaining its international ranking in 2026.
