Enrolment and Timetable

At the beginning of the academic year, each student has to enroll in the curricular units that he or she will take that year. At the beginning of the 2nd semester, it is possible to change the enrolments of subjects of that semester.

At the beginning of each semester, students shall book classes and the shifts of each class.

Failure to enroll in course units in two consecutive semesters will result in the expiration of the enrollment as a student of Técnico, and the registration status of the student will be considered abandoned. It is possible to ask for the re-entry if they wish to return to Técnico.

Enrolment in the Curricular Units

Each student is expected to be enroled in 30 ECTS credits, however it is possible to enroll in course units up to a maximum of 36 ECTS credits per semester. Finalist students who are in a position to finish their study programme, may request the enrolment in up to 42 ECTS.

The curricular year (AC) of each student according to the courses in which he/she is enrolled is defined as:
AC = min [ integer [(aproved ECTS credits + 24)/60 + 1]; number of course years]

During the transition period (until 2025/26), following the implementation of the new teaching model: 1st study cycle students, who entered until 2020/21 and were enroled in 2021/22, may enrol in curricular units of the 2nd cycle continuity programme, provided they have completed 120 ECTS credits of the 1st cycle.

Mobility students do not need to register in course units, but should book classes and shifts.

Curricular Units Enrolment

You can request the cancellation of curricular units’ enrolments up to 30 working days after the end of the enrolment period.

Booking Classes and Shifts

  • Select a class (upper right corner of the webpage);
  • For each subject, a shift for each type of class must be added.
  • Finish so that all the choices appear in the timetable. Repeat for each curricular unit.
  • Check your Timetable available in the menu Student > View (sidebar) > Timetable.

Class Booking Timetable

The enrollment in laboratory classes is made according to the information provided by the responsible professors, and the shifts reservation can be made either electronically or in person, depending on the course.

Note: Students will always be considered to attend the shifts in which they were placed for the purposes of theory classes, problems, practicals, tests, exams, posting of grades, etc.

For questions regarding the booking of classes, shifts or timetables, namely situations of maximum capacity reached, the Pedagogic Organization Office should be contacted.

Undergraduate Programmes Curricular Components

  1. Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

Before enrolling in the humanistic courses, each student will have to apply to the intended options, being able to choose up to 6 curricular units in the application form, ordered according to preference. Applications take place in two periods, one in each semester.

The courses Management and Introduction to Economics are already included in the curricular plan of each course, so there is no need to apply in this case. The application is made in Fénix, when enrolling in the semester, after the results are known.

The courses list and selection criteria are available at:

    Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

  2. Pre-Major Options

These curricular units (3 to 12 ECTS credits) are included in the curricular plan of several undergraduate programmes, more specifically in the 3rd year, allowing each student to choose subjects from a list defined by the Course Coordination.

The offer is available in the Fénix page of each course and the enrollment is made in Fénix as well, at the same time of the enrollment ring in the semester and in the remaining subjects.

  3. 1st Cycle Integrated Project

In the last semester of the undergraduate programme, there is a project curricular unit that can assume one of the following modalities:

    • Problem/Client-based project (with a company),
    • Research-based project (with a research center, with one or more students),
    • Capstone project (with students of different courses).

As modalidades oferecidas e o funcionamento desta unidade curricular são específicas de cada curso.

Each undergraduate programme has its specific modalities.
The project work-topics are announced in Fénix (Student menu) so that students may apply to the intended topic. Application and enrollment deadlines will be announced in due time.

Masters Programmes Curricular Components

  1. Specialization Areas

Masters programmes offer more than one field of expertise, either areas, branches or specialization profiles.

Students choose them in the Fénix system, simultaneously with the enrollment in the curricular units of the year/semester from which the unfolding of the study plan into areas of specialization begins (generally in the 1st year of the master’s degree).

Once chosen, any change will depend on the approval of the Course Coordination and should be requested to the Graduate Area (students from Alameda campus) or the Academic Management Area (students from Taguspark campus).

  2. Free Options

In all masters programmes, it is possible to choose optional courses from any scientific area of Técnico or the University of Lisbon.

The enrollment in Técnico’s free options is done through Fénix, when enrolling in the semester and in the other courses, without the need of approval by the Course Coordination.

The enrollment in free options of other Schools of the University of Lisbon is made by request to the Graduate Area (students from Alameda campus) or the Academic Management Area (students from Taguspark campus), and validation by the Course Coordination is required.

  3. Minors

A Minor degree refers to a small number of specific subjects, corresponding to 18 ECTS credits that are part of the optional component of each master’s programme.

Minors are offered to all Técnico’s master programmes, but if the courses of a certain Minor are predominantly from the scientific area of a study programme, the access to this Minor for students of this programme will not be possible.

Before enrolling, each student will have to apply for the Minor intended, being able to choose up to 6 options at the application stage, ordered according to preference. The applications will be made within the period defined in the Calendar of Academic Deadlines.

The Minors list and the selection criteria are available in:

    Minors

  4. 2nd cycle Integrated Project

Almost every master programme offers a project curricular unit that can be done in one of the following modalities:

    • Problem/Client-based project (with a company),
    • Research-based project (with a research center, with one or more students),
    • Capstone project (with students of different courses).

Each undergraduate programme has its specific modalities.
The project work-topics are announced in Fénix (Student menu) so that students may apply to the intended topic. Application and enrollment deadlines will be announced in due time.

  5. Dissertation

At the beginning of each semester, each student will have to enroll in the Dissertation curricular unit, in the semester enrollment period, as the other courses, in Fénix (Student > Subjects).

There are specific rules defined by each Course Coordination Office that establish the minimum number of ECTS credits approved and necessary to enrol in the Dissertation, as well as the maximum number of ECTS credits of other CU in which each student can be enrolled in accumulation.

    Master’s Dissertation

  6. Extracurricular Activities I and II

The crediting of extracurricular activities aims to encourage students to acquire, in a diversified and complementary way, social, cultural, scientific, technological and professional skills.

Extracurricular activities must be credited upon request in one or two curricular units named Extracurricular Activities I and II (EA I and EA II), corresponding to 3 ECTS credits each, offered in all 2nd cycle courses. They can be taken in any semester and even in the 1st cycle (as long as they have not been counted towards the award of the diploma for that cycle).

These course units are included in the Free Options group and each student must submit proof of these activities to the Graduate Area (courses at Alameda campus) or the Academic Management Area (courses at Taguspark campus).

Registration and Enrolment Statement

In the first weeks of the academic year, two documents are provided, which prove the enrollment and registration of each student in a study programme at Técnico, in a that school year:

  • Registration and Enrolment Statement (in portuguese and english);
  • Statement for the discount on public transport card sub23 (in portuguese).

Both statements are uploaded in the institucional drive of each student (login with Técnico ID).

Download Statements

If these doocuments are not available on the drive or if changes need to be made (case of students with social grants in the case of the statement for the sub23 card), the Graduate Area (Alameda campus) or the Academic Management Area (Taguspark campus) should be contacted.

Digital Signature

The document has a digital signature that is legally valid with all national services and entities (for example, for military purposes, to obtain family allowance, public transport pass, health insurance).

The validation of signed documents must be done with Adobe Reader.

Limitation

In accordance with the Law no. 37/2003 of August 22, a regime of prescription applies to the 1st and 2nd cycle and integrated cycles courses that aims to promote the students’ accountability, in the sense that they should show adequate academic performance, justifying, by their merit, the access to the social good they benefit from: their education and training. According to the same Law, the limited student is prevented from applying or enrolling in the same or another course in the two following semesters.

Técnico offers support to students in a situation close to prescription, namely in the definition of objectives, priorities and effective study methods and in the management of time and stress.
This support is provided by Técnico’s Academic Development Unit team, which has professionals specialised in academic success and learning.
