The public ceremony of the Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo Award Ceremony (7th Edition) will take place on 24th January, 6 p.m., in the Great Hall of Instituto Superior Técnico, Alameda Campus.
The award will be delivered to Elsa Abranches, in the “Role Model” category, and Marta Tomé, in the “Young Alumna” category.
The jury decided to award the prize to engineer Marta Tomé in the “Young Alumna” category for her dissertation “Buckling analysis of laminated composite and sandwich plates considering the piezoelectric effect” and “in recognition of her outstanding academic career in which she has combined excellence in learning with the curiosity to explore new academic and professional themes and activities, her high quality dissertation work, with which she got the highest grade and an article published in a prestigious international journal with high impact factor, and her desire for learning and personal development.”
The jury also decided to award the prize in the “Role Model” category to Doctor Elsa Abranches, “in recognition of a career dedicated to research, innovation, development and regulation of advanced therapies with products derived from stem cells, her current leadership position in strategic planning for the development of advanced cell-based therapies and her contributions to the strategy of drug regulatory agencies in the European context for advanced cell-based therapies.”
Técnico created this award in 2016 to promote gender equality and to recognise the crucial role of women in engineering areas. The award is also a way of honouring Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo’s outstanding contribution as an engineer, alumna and national leader with a decisive role and impact on Portuguese society.

The jury of the 7th Edition of the Maria de Lourdes Pintasilgo Award was made up of Alexandre Bernardino, Ângela Nunes, Beatriz Silva, Cristina Sernadas, Isabel Marrucho, João Ramôa Correia, Miguel Goulão, Pedro Brogueira, Raquel Aires de Barros, Rogério Colaço and Teresa Peña.
The Award has the high patronage of his excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Professor Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
