Title: “Economic Theory and Business Management”

This talk will focus on economic theory and business management, covering topics such as:
• Neoclassical Theory of The Firm (NTF):
o The representative firm.
o The weakness of NTF in the decision-making process.

• The inside of organisations:
o Complementary theories of the NTF.
o The Economics of Organisations.

• The Paradigm Shift in the study of management of organisations. Complex Systems Theory and Chaos Theory.

• Simplicity and Illusion of Control in Business Management.

About the speakers:

Luís Mira Amaral has a degree in Electrical Engineering from Técnico, a Master’s degree in Economics from Nova SBE and a Post-Graduation in Management from Stanford University. He was Minister of Labour and Social Security (1985-87) and Minister of Industry and Energy (1987-95). He is an invited associate professor of Industrial Economics at Nova SBE and an invited Full Professor of Economics and Management at Técnico. He is currently Chairman of Busy Angels SA. and Bynd Venture Capital SCR, and Chairman of CIP’s Industry and Energy Councils.

Aníbal Santos is an Associate Professor at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics. He was the coordinator of the Department of Economics and a member of the UCP’s Board of Trustees from 1986 to 1991. He holds a degree in Finance and a PhD in Economics. He has been a supervisor and examiner for doctoral and master’s degrees. He was a director, chairman and member of the advisory board of companies in the following sectors: gas, civil construction, water, sanitation and solid waste, electricity and natural gas transmission and telecommunications. He was director-general of the “Gabinete para os Assuntos Comunitários” of the Ministry of Industry and Energy, director-general of the “Instituto da For¬mação Bancária” and president of the “Instituto Superior de Gestão Bancária”. He is currently a private economic consultant.
