Técnico podcast “110 Histórias, 110 Objetos” – The Mastodon teeth

The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) covers the 110 years of history of Instituto Superior Técnico, through its past, present and future objects.

A collection of objects related to different fields, such as science, music, arts and sports, is the starting point for conversations with people who will tell us more about the history of these objects.

A new episode is released every week. The podcast “110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) is part of the Público newspaper podcasts.

Today’s episode (#28) – 7th January 2022: 110 Histórias | 110 Objetos” (“110 Stories, 110 Objects”) – Os Dentes de Mastodontes” (“The Mastodon teeth”).

About 20 million years ago, portentous Mastodons (ancestors of the elephants) peacefully walked around Técnico – Alameda Campus. The Mastodon teeth fossils found in the vicinity of Alameda campus show evidence of a period when Lisbon was a savannah, with vegetation up to two meters high, and animals such as hyenas, hippos, giraffes, beavers and even… cat-sized horses. The Mastodon teeth are one of the Décio Thadeu Museum’s major assets that will help us understand some mysteries of the past.
