BNP Paribas rewards academic merit of MSc student in Mathematics and Applications

The Técnico student Armando Sobrinho Assembleia received the BNP Paribas Merit Award in Introduction to Mathematical Finance.

Armando Sobrinho Assembleia (MSc student in Mathematics and Applications) is the winner of the 1st edition of BNP Paribas Merit Award in Introduction to Mathematical Finance, which amounts to €1,350. Armando Sobrinho Assembleia stood out as the best student in Introduction to Mathematical Finance curricular unit (uc) – Department of Mathematics (DM).

The award ceremony took place this Wednesday, September 15, and was attended by the president of Técnico, Rogério Colaço, the vice-president of Técnico for Operations and Enterprise Relationships, professor Pedro Amaral, and two BPN Paribas representatives, François Girardot, Quantitative Researcher, and Christopher Claude, Head of RISK Iberian Hub – Lisbon.

The president of Técnico highlighted the importance of the university-business link, and recalled “in order to train top talent it is crucial to know what companies need and expect from this talent”. According to professor Rogério Colaço, “we can train our students effectively if we know the problems faced by companies”.

Armando Sobrinho Assembleia underlined that he felt honoured to receive the award and shared “this partnership between Técnico and BNP Paribas is an important step to shape the future of academia, because I think universities should try to bridge the gap between academia and business”.

The BNP Paribas Merit Award in Introduction to Mathematical Finance also includes a €900 monetary prize to the DM for the improvement of learning conditions. The Técnico professors José Mourão (president of the DM), and Claudia Philippart, (professor of Introduction to Mathematical Finance curricular unit), expressed their gratitude for BNP Paribas support and for this partnership that adds value to teaching and research activities.

All Técnico students enrolled in this curricular unit are eligible to apply for the BNP Paribas Merit Award in Introduction to Mathematical Finance, which is awarded annually. The award is one of the many collaborative initiatives created by BNP Paribas and Técnico, following the accession of BNP Paribas to Técnico partner network on February 3, 2020.
