EIT InnoEnergy Students learn about the energy challenges in Azores

EIT InnoEnergy MSc students at Técnico have just arrived from a four-day technical visit to São Miguel island in Azores. This extra-curricular activity of EIT InnoEnergy MSc students was organized by IST and InnoEnergy, in collaboration with Electricidade dos Açores S.A. (EDA), and gave students the opportunity to learn about the challenges and solutions for off-grid areas.

Securing the quality and reliability of energy supply systems poses very unique challenges for islands. Energy imports imply significant economic and environmental costs, yet restricted economic activity can leave appropriate investment options for clean energy out of reach. The nine volcanic islands of the Azores islands are a good case study on how to solve energy challenges in islands.

The participants had the opportunity to attend a workshop by Electricidade dos Açores (EDA), to visit the geothermal power plant of Ribeira Grande, the thermal power plant of Caldeirão and the wind park of Graminhais.

We invite all students who want to know more about the EIT InnoEnergy Master’s School, to attend InnoEnergy Master’s Open Day 2020@Técnico. More information.
