Environmental problems and solutions under debate at JEAMBI 2022

The event started this Wednesday and runs until next Friday, March 11.

The Environmental Engineering Seminar Series (JEAMBI) started this Wednesday, March 9, at Alameda campus (Congress Centre), in hybrid format. The JEAMBI runs until Friday, March 11.

“Last year’s edition was held in hybrid format and went very well. People from other universities and even from other countries attended our lectures”, shared Catarina Querido, president of JEAMBI 2022. “The hybrid format also allows us to invite speakers who we would very much like to have at JEAMBI but cannot travel here, which will be the case this year”, adds the alumna.

The president of Técnico, professor Rogério Colaço, opened the session recalling that the environmental challenge is “transgenerational” and the “greatest one in the next century”. “Science and technology can help to solve environmental problems and you are an integral part of this solution”.

Engineer Alexandre Gaspar (Navigator Company) made a brief presentation of the company and explained the concepts of Biorefinery, Bioeconomy and Circular Economy. “Paper and cardboard products can be recycled and reused several times, for example, the cellulose fibre from Portuguese eucalyptus can be reused 7 times before it degrades completely. The sheets of paper you use in your daily life can be recycled into magazines, boxes, bags, etc”.

Engineer Alexandre Gaspar also shared some details about the production process: “the pulp production process is very efficient and very simple. All chemicals used in the process are recovered and regenerated”. “It is very interesting that companies are looking at pulp and paper products to replace some plastics because these products have the highest recycling rates in the European Union”, he added.

The electrification of the economy, new agricultural techniques, behavioural sciences applied to sustainability, solar energy and the decarbonisation of the economy were some topics addressed at JEAMBI.

“We hope to attract all people interested in these areas. Our target audience is, of course, the environmental engineering students, but the topics are very varied and we always manage to reach students from other courses”, shared the alumna.
