JEAmbi focused on the paths towards environmental sustainability

The Environmental Engineering seminar series addresses a wide range of current issues and topics.

The Environment and the Pandemic, the Use of Hydrogen, the Decarbonization of Society and the Sustainable Construction are some of the topics of the 12th JEAmbi – the Environmental Engineering seminar series. Once again, the event brings together several experts who will address important issues of our time. This year, the sessions will take place online, via Zoom, and the activities are open to all people interested in this field of engineering.

This year’s edition includes lectures, panel discussions, a workshop on vegetable, healthy and sustainable food, and a session with Técnico alumni.

About 200 participants attended last year’s edition. This year, even before the start of the event, the number of registered participants exceeded 400.

Elvira Fortunato, professor and Vice-Rector at Nova University and Director of CENIMAT, gave a lecture titled “Sustainability is not an option, it is an obligation”. The professor explained the potential of cellulose and how it can be used in electronics, “in order to help solve the growing e-waste problem. Even though it is not the solution to all problems, it can contribute to its resolution”, she stressed.

Cellulose can be used in the production of transistors and also in rapid diagnostic tests (glucose, cholesterol and uric acid), which is becoming increasingly common at CENIMAT, according to professor Elvira Fortunato.

The online format allowed “to reach participants and speakers from other parts of the country and the world”.

Inês Rico, president of JEAmbi, says “the online experience can be a starting point to improve the future editions. I wouldn’t say that JEAmbi should be held in an entirely online format, because despite everything we know that in-person events also have advantages. However, we believe that hybrid events may be a good option”, says the student.

The event ends this Friday, March 5. Until then, the participants will have the opportunity to learn more about Bioarchitecture, Bioconstruction, Environmental Crime and Environmental Infractions, and much more.
