Gonçalo Faria was the winner of the 2021 edition of the Luís Vidigal Award for his master’s thesis in Data Science and Engineering titled “Differential Causal Discovery under Latent Interventions“, supervised by professor Mário Figueiredo (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering – DEEC), and professor André Martins (Department of Computer Science and Engineering – DEI).
“I am very happy to receive this award, which recognises my hard work and dedication to this project”, says Gonçalo Faria. The Técnico alumnus received the award last Friday, March 25, at the Electrical and Computer Engineering Seminar Series (JEEC), from the president of DEEC, professor José Santos-Victor, and the member of the award committee, engineer Fernando Moreira (INESC).
According to Gonçalo Faria, his work addresses “a very relevant problem in several areas – science, data analysis – using a set of current and sophisticated tools combined in an innovative way, achieving state-of-the-art results”, which may have contributed to winning the award.
The student is planning “to conduct research in the industry sector in the short term” and “to pursue a PhD in this area”.
The Luís Vidigal Award is delivered annually and aims to recognise a master’s dissertation whose topic falls within the scientific areas of Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, which brings together science, innovation and quality. The jury of the award is chaired by professor Carlos Salema, and composed of the DEEC professors Luís Miguel Silveira, Moisés Piedade, João Miranda Lemos, Mário Figueiredo, Leonel Sousa, Pedro Lima and Bruno Martins, and the DEI professor Arlindo Oliveira.
