The third edition of the Mathematics Seminar Series at Técnico are running from 4th to 7th April. The Mathematics student group at Técnico (NMATH-IST) decided to organise a workshop on dance this year as a strategy to show the interactions between mathematics and art.
An exhibition titled “A matemática nas 7 artes” occupies the main building lobby. Several companies participate in these seminar series allowing students to clarify their doubts and exchange views on the labour market. The main goal of this event is “to show students the broad scope of Mathematics and how it can be fun”, explains Marta Correia, vice-president of NMATH-IST and member of the organising team. “Mathematics is everywhere and we are looking forward to seeing this idea evolves”, she added.
About 80 secondary school students from four schools attended the first day and had the opportunity to participate in several activities related to mathematics: lectures and a math games workshop. “Many students wanted to stay a little bit longer after the end of the activities”, says Marta correia.
These last two days will be focused on lectures “mostly intended for students of this area”, explains the vice-president of NMATH-IST. The different branches of Mathematics and its application, as well as the alumni experiences will be some of the topics approached in the sessions that will be held at Abreu faro amphitheatre.
