New international training programmes for Técnico community: applications are open

Unite! Widening promotes three training programmes aimed at PhD students, PhD supervisors, and internationalisation.

PhD students, researchers, professors (supervisors) and academic and administrative staff involved in doctoral education at Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa, can apply for three training courses organised by the Unite! Widening project until 13 September.

Between October and November, Wrocław University of Science and Technology in Poland and the Polytechnic University of Turin in Italy are hosting events focusing on various aspects of doctoral education. For participants from Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), participation is free, and travel and accommodation costs are covered, in accordance with the Unite! Widening guidelines.

Wrocław: two pathways, different stages of the PhD programme

Between 21 and 23 October, Wrocław is hosting two training sessions aimed at different stakeholders in the doctoral journey. For PhD students and early-career researchers, Widening Training @Wrocław – Onboarding Early-Stage Researchers offers an overview of the first steps in research, from defining the research question and planning the PhD to developing skills and preparing for a research career. The training also includes opportunities for peer learning and international networking.

For those following these programmes, the Widening Training @Wrocław – Train Supervisors for PhD Collaborations focuses on PhD supervision and the tools needed for more effective collaboration. Setting clear expectations, giving constructive feedback, promoting autonomy and guidance on different career paths are among the topics under discussion.

There are 6 spots available in each training course for ULisboa participants. Application deadline: September 13, 2026

Turin: rethinking doctoral education beyond borders

In November, the focus shifts to the international dimension of doctoral schools. From 18 to 20 November, the Polytechnic University of Turin will host the  Widening Training @PoliTO – Doctoral School International Impact and Attractiveness, aimed at researchers and academic or administrative staff involved in doctoral education.

The training programme takes the challenges of internationalisation as its starting point to explore strategies for strengthening the attractiveness of doctoral schools, through the analysis of international models, strategic partnerships and forms of collaboration between institutions. Six places are available for ULisboa participants for this initiative. Applications must be submitted by 14 September at 2 p.m.

Forming part of the Unite! Widening project strategy, which involves the participation of various Técnico professors, the three initiatives help to strengthen the institutional capacities of the partner universities in the Unite! Alliance, promoting international collaboration through the sharing of knowledge, experiences and best practices in the field of doctoral education.
