According to the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2020, Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) ranks 121st worldwide and 30th at European level. In addition, ULisboa is the leading university in the Iberian Peninsula.

In an analysis by research topics, ULisboa stands 93rd worldwide and 16th at European level, in Mathematics and computer science. ULisboa stands out once again in Physical Sciences and engineering: 100th worldwide and 17th at European level.

The Leiden ranking analyses the performance, quality and impact of world universities’ scientific publications, based on bibliometric indicators from the Web of Science, produced by Clarivate Analytics. The CWTS Leiden Ranking 2020 includes 1176 universities from 65 different countries, in the period 2015–2018.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking is an annual global university ranking drawn up by the Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University, which provides indicators of scientific impact, collaboration, open access publishing and gender diversity.

The top-3 in the general ranking, at national level, is led by ULisboa, followed by University of Porto and University of Coimbra.

Harvard university is the leading university worldwide. Tsinghua University ranks 1st in Mathematics and computer science, and Physical Sciences and Engineering Sciences.
