Universidade de Lisboa is among the 120 major universities worldwide in scientific performance

The large publication output in several research areas was key to achieve this result.

Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) holds the 120th position worldwide and maintains the 31st position at European level in the CWTS Leiden Ranking 2018. These results are mainly due to Técnico’ s scientific performance in the areas of engineering and physics (2474) as well as Mathematics and Computer Science (908). ULisboa ranks 6th in Mathematics and Computer Science research areas and 15th in the Engineering category.

The CWTS Leiden Ranking uses a sophisticated bibliometric methodology and provides information exclusively about the research done at universities The Leiden Ranking is based exclusively on bibliographic data from the Web of Science. This year’s edition was based on publications in the period 2013–2016 and analyzed the scientific performance of 938 universities from 55 different countries.

As in the previous edition (2012-2015), ULisboa occupies a leading position among the Iberian Peninsula universities and among the Portuguese universities, followed by the University of Porto and the University of Coimbra.

According to this ranking, carried out by the Center for Science and Technology Studies, Harvard University ranks 1st worldwide again followed by the University of Toronto and Zhejiang University, respectively.
