ULisboa is among the top 300 universities in the world according to Shanghai Ranking

Universidade de Lisboa once again holds a prominent position in Shanghai Ranking, the oldest and one of the most prestigious international university rankings.

Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is once again among the best universities in the world, according to the 2021 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released this Sunday, August 15. ULisboa ranks among the top 300 universities worldwide, and ranks first at national level.

Released annually by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy, and published since 2003, the ARWU scrutinizes over 2000 universities, and the best 1000 universities in the world are published. ARWU uses six indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate Analytics, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index – Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance of a university.

ULisboa has increased the number of scientific publications in “Nature and Science”, as well as the number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index-Expanded and in Social Science Citation Index, compared to last year’s edition.

Although ULisboa is the only Portuguese university listed in the top 300, the Shanghai Ranking highlights five more national universities: University of Porto (301-400), University of Minho (401-500), University of Coimbra (501-600). Nova University Lisbon and University of Aveiro rank among the top 601-700 universities in the world.

Harvard University once again tops the ranking list. Stanford University and the University of Cambridge rank 2nd and 3rd respectively. Other top 10 universities are MIT (4th) and Berkeley (5th).
