This year’s edition of the Shanghai ranking was released last week and Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa) is once again the best Portuguese university, featuring among the top 151-200 universities worldwide.
The number of ULisboa’s scientific articles indexed in specialised databases was a major factor to maintain the top spot, scoring 48,8 points out of 100. Técnico’s research output stands out, namely in the fields of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Civil Engineering. In the area of natural sciences, Mathematics and Physics scored 70,5 and 52 respectively, due largely to the scientific articles published by Técnico and Faculdade de Ciências.
Five more Portuguese universities feature in Shanghai ranking: Universities of Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra and Minho are among the top 401-500 universities worldwide, while Universidade Nova de Lisboa ranked among the top 501-600. Harvard University has maintained the top spot in this ranking conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Shanghai ranking assesses more than 1200 institutions based on four criteria: quality of education, quality of faculty, research output and per capita academic performance.
