Celebrating Physics

Students, alumni, faculty and representatives of several institutions and centres at Técnico attended the event held within the commemorations of the 30th anniversary of Engineering Physics at Técnico.

On December 16, the coordination of the Integrated Master in Engineering Physics (MEFT), the Executive Board of the Department of Physics (DF) and the Engineering Physics Student Group (NFIST) organised a workshop dedicated to Newton and Engineering Physics at Técnico.

The opening session was attended by professors Arlindo Oliveira, president of Técnico, Luís Lemos Alves, president of the Department of Physics, Vasco Guerra, coordinator of MEFT, and Rafael Carreira, president of NFIST. Professor Arlindo Oliveira recalled the importance of this area of engineering: “Physics and Mathematics are two key areas at Técnico, making our school different from others”. “Let us hope that this Newton’mas workshop will be the first of many others to come”, he concluded.

The MEFT’s awards for Academic Excellence and for the best dissertations were delivered after the IST Distinguished Lecture by Clément Mouhot. Lucas de Sá, 1st cycle student, received a pecuniary prize that will allow him to pay his tuition fees in the second cycle. Diogo Cruz and António Coelho received honourable mentions.

Professor Vasco Guerra announced the best MEFT’s dissertations in the scientific areas of Astrophysics and Gravitation, Interdisciplinary Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Plasma Physics, Lasers and Nuclear Fusion.
