The 2023 edition of the Universidade de Lisboa / Caixa Geral de Depósitos Scientific Awards highlights twelve Técnico researchers. The award of 6500 euros was delivered to six members of the Técnico community. An honourable mention was given to six members of the Técnico community. The Técnico researchers total more than a quarter of the 40 names awarded by the Universidade de Lisboa, with Técnico leading the number of winners on both the award and honourable mentions.
Delivered annually, the award aims to “reward scientific research activities and encourage the submission of papers in renowned international journals”, covering 26 scientific areas. By submitting books, book chapters, original articles or review articles, the candidates were assessed on the relevance of their scientific output.
The six Técnico researchers among the 20 award winners are:
- Economics and Management – Ana Póvoa, Centre for Management Studies (CEGIST);
- Civil Engineering – Alban Kuriqi, Civil Engineering, Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS);
- Environmental Engineering and Energy – Patrícia Baptista, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+);
- Electrical Engineering and Aerospace Engineering (Avionics) – Mário Figueiredo, Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT);
- Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering (Aircrafts) – Ângelo Teixeira, Centre for Marine Technology and Ocean Engineering (CENTEC);
- Geography and Territory (Physical and Human Geography, Territory, Urbanism and Planning, and Transportation Systems) – João Abreu e Silva, Civil Engineering, Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS);
The six Técnico researchers among the 20 honourable mention winners are:
- Biology, Biological Engineering, Biochemistry and Biotechnology – Miguel Cacho Teixeira, Institute for Bioengineering and Biosciences (iBB);
- Computer Science and Computer Engineering – João Costa Sousa, Mechanical Engineering Institute (idMEC);
- Civil Engineering – José Bogas, Civil Engineering, Research and Innovation for Sustainability (CERIS);
- Environmental Engineering and Energy – Ana Moita, Center for Innovation, Technology and Policy Research (IN+);
- Mechanical Engineering, Marine Engineering, and Aerospace Engineering (Aircrafts) – Nuno Silvestre, Mechanical Engineering Institute (idMEC);
- Physics and Materials – Ana Serro, Centro de Química Estrutural (CQE).
The award ceremony will take place on 23 November 2023, at 5.30 p.m., in the Great Hall of the Rectorate Building, Universidade de Lisboa. The event will feature the lecture “Ser cientista em Portugal no séc. XXI” (“Being a scientist in Portugal in the 21st century”), by the Técnico professor Luís Oliveira e Silva.
